VCode Louis-James Davis

Why the VCode scanner would rather wait than guess

For identity, a wrong read is worse than no read. How I measured the scanner's false-read rate on a real phone and designed it to wait for certainty.

What I tried

For an identity product a wrong read is far worse than a failed one, because nobody knows it happened. So I set out to measure how often the scanner could be fooled.

Why I chose differently

Error correction helps a scanner recover a damaged code. It also widens what the scanner will accept. A camera sees a great many code-like shapes every second. I measured on a real phone with millions of random inputs rather than trusting a calculation.

What I chose

I chose layered safeguards that trade a moment's patience for certainty. The scanner reports a code only once it is sure. A real code still reads in a blink.

The principle

Measure false accepts on the real device. A calculation, however careful, is not a measurement.
