Verus Louis-James Davis

Letting two devices agree how a call should sound

Why Verus calls negotiate their audio at the start, so Apple devices keep their best quality and calls with Android still just work.

What I tried

Verus calls between Apple devices used the best audio they could. Android had its own format. In the first design each end chose alone and told the other afterwards.

Why I chose differently

That only works when both ends happen to choose alike. Calls across the two platforms needed to agree rather than assume.

What I chose

I replaced choosing with agreeing. Each side says what it can play and the call settles on the best both share, with no one having to pick. Any mismatch now says so rather than going quiet. The first clean audio crossed between the platforms that day.

The principle

In real-time systems every refusal should say something. Silence looks like a network problem.
